In his critiques of *Water Margin* and *The Romance of the Western Chamber*, Jin Shengthan strived to express his ideas on narrative reception. This idea can be explored from three perspectives: the purpose of literary criticism, the nature of narrative reception, and the conditions for narrative reception. The ideas of narrative reception and reception aesthetics share certain similarities. In this sense, his ideas were ahead of their time.
